Stuck, or have an idea? Email hello@munchmirror.com and a person will reply. Below are answers to the things people ask most.

Getting started

Which iPads work?

Munch Mirror needs iPadOS 17 or later and an iPad with Face ID or an A12 chip or newer. That includes every iPad Pro since 2018, iPad Air from the 3rd generation, iPad mini from the 5th generation, and the standard iPad from the 8th generation. The app checks when it opens and tells you if your iPad can't track faces. On those iPads the mirror shows a practice face instead so you can still try the activity.

How do I set it up for a meal?

  1. Open the app and choose the activity: face paint, a scene, or let the child choose.
  2. Choose what today is about and how many steps make the goal.
  3. Optionally scan the QR code with your phone to open the remote.
  4. Tap Start, prop the iPad on the table in landscape, about an arm's length from the child, and hand over.

The app asked for camera permission

The mirror needs the front camera to show the child their face. If you declined, open Settings on the iPad, find Munch Mirror and turn on Camera. The camera is only ever a live mirror and nothing is recorded. See the privacy policy.

During the meal

How do I mark a step from the iPad?

GestureWhat it does
Two-finger tapThe goal's main step (a bite, a piece of the plate, and so on)
Three-finger tapA brave step: a little sticker, without changing the design
Hold two fingers for 2 secondsThe grown-ups' menu: all the step buttons, undo, finish the meal

I registered a step by mistake

Tap Undo last on the phone remote, or hold two fingers on the iPad and tap Undo. The design quietly rewinds one part without any fuss on screen. Undo only removes steps that a grown-up registered.

Can we stop early?

Yes, any time. Tap Finish meal on the remote or in the grown-ups' menu. The end screen celebrates what was done, and the meal goes into the sticker book as it is. Nothing is ever taken away for stopping early.

How do I save a picture?

When the goal is reached, a Save a picture button appears. The first time you tap it, iPadOS asks for permission to add pictures to Photos. The picture goes into your Photos library and nowhere else.

The phone remote

The remote page won't open

The remote says it is disconnected

The page reconnects by itself when the iPad is reachable again. If it doesn't, reload the page or scan the QR code once more.

Your data

Where is the meal history?

The sticker book on the setup screen lists past meals, and the export button saves them as a CSV file through the share sheet. Everything lives on the device. Deleting the app deletes it all.

Is anything about my child sent anywhere?

No. There is no account and no profile for your child, and nothing that identifies them. Today the app sends nothing anywhere at all. The privacy policy lists exactly what it stores on the iPad and what we promise about anything added later.

Something else?

Email hello@munchmirror.com. If something went wrong, say which iPad you have, the iPadOS version, and what you were doing when it happened. That is usually enough to find the cause.
